Both of these types of central units require ducts to allow the cool air (or warm) to flow throughout the house. The newest technology and design in central air conditioners are the ductless type where no duct work is needed as the cool air is carried from a small outdoor unto through refrigeration lines. These kinds of units are quiet, efficient, easy to install and are virtually unnoticeable.
