Prepare Your Outdoor AC for the Coming Winter

The winter season can be a pretty harsh one, for some they might even consider it to be the harshest season in the year - depending on where you live. That harshness is especially true for living things, like people, animals and plants. However, it could also be quite true for non living things that happen to be exposed to the weather. If you are not careful with some objects that are left outside, then you might probably find that the winter season has had a particularly considerable and damaging effect on it.

Your outdoor air conditioning unit is certainly no exception to the objects that could be severely affected by the weather during the winter. And since your AC unit is a pretty valuable home appliance for you, then you'd surely want to be able to prepare it for the coming winter season. Being able to do that becomes even more important to you if you happen to be living in an area that is prone to having or accumulating up to several feet of snow during the winter months, or if your place is surrounded by mostly tall trees.

There are steps that you could do however, to prepare your outdoor AC for the onset of the cold weather. Since there's really no other way around it - because your AC is a necessity - then you got to do it. This means that you need to start covering it up by fall and the following are the steps on how to do it properly.

  • The first thing that you need to do is measure the height, depth, and the width of your AC unit. Do this with the use of a standard measuring tape. After taking the measurements, you should write down but you should also round the figures that you got to the nearest whole number.

  • You now need to find out the amount of covering that you would require for the whole AC unit. To figure out the amount, add the width of the unit's top with the sum of the length of each side. The resulting figure is the total amount of covering that you will are going to use.

  • As covering for the AC unit, you would be making a good choice if you select burlap as the material for the covering. This will help in allowing much better air movement in and around the unit's parts and any chance of the unit building up rust due to moist exposure is greatly reduced. The burlaps should be wrapped over the top of the unit and then around its base. To secure the ends, use florist wire or twist ties.

  • In order to make sure that the burlap is secured in its place, use twine by wrapping it around a number of times and then to make sure that it does not go loose at some point, tie the ends in a knot. You would have then secured and prepared your outdoor AC unit for the winter season.
