My Dog Gets Car Sick - How to Prevent Car Sickness in Dogs

If your dog gets car sick, there are some natural remedies that you can use to help him. Most dogs love to travel in the car-a dog with his head out the window, ears flapping in the breeze is an iconic image of doggy travel. Unfortunately, not all pets can handle travelling in the car. If your dog gets car sick, there are some things you can do to help him tolerate, and even enjoy, the ride. If you suspect your dog is suffering from motion sickness, or has stress when you put him onto the car, look for these signs and symptoms of car sickness:

* Yawning

* Excessive Drooling

* Vomiting

* Acts hesitant to get into the car

If your dog gets car sick, he could be suffering from the physical effects of the motion of the car, or he could be feeling stressed out by either riding in the car, or by the thought of your destination. If the only place you take your dog is the vet, he will naturally associate a vet visit with the car. For dogs who suffer from anxiety or fearfulness, a car trip is an unknown element that will cause them considerable stress and anxiety.

There are a few things you can do to help your dog. Try these tips:

* Not feeding him immediately before a car trip. He will be more likely to feel queasy on a full stomach.

* Keep the air in the car very cool. If your dog is in a carrier, it will be hotter inside than it is in the rest of the car. If your dog is too large for a carrier, stress may make him feel overheated as well.

* Work on training and conditioning your dog to enjoy the car. Take some time to sit with your dog in the car-you don't even need to turn it on. After you have spent a few minutes praising him for getting into the car, give him a treat, and then let him out. Do this a few times, and then introduce a short trip around the block. Each time you get into the car, go a little further, until your dog is confident, and looks forward to travelling. If your dog is experiencing anxiety, and not true, physical motion sickness, conditioning can help sooth his fears.

* Use an herbal remedy designed to ease nausea and sooth your dog's digestive system. Look for a homeopathic remedy containing Zingiber officinalis and Mentha piperita to help if your dog gets car sick.

* If your dog is having anxiety or stress from travel, try a remedy containing Aconite, Cocculus, or Pulsatilla Vulgaris to ease his fears. By using a natural remedy, you can alleviate they symptoms in a gentle way, without having to resort to tranquilizers or medications.
