What is an Inverter Air Conditioner?

When people look at buying an air conditioning system, one question that often comes up is what is an inverter? Inverter air conditioning systems are quite common today but what is an inverter and what does an inverter do? Below are 4 benefits of purchasing an inverter air conditioning system.

1) Quieter Operation - The compressor on an inverter is usually a few decibels quieter than a standard unit. This means less noise gets into both you and your neighbors homes which is a benefit. They are especially beneficial in homes where you are relatively close to your neighbors home.

2) Less Strain On Components - The smooth starting (called a soft start) of an inverter means less strain on components. These systems generally ease into operation which causes less wear and tear.

3) Minimal Energy Use - Inverters have been claimed to be anywhere form about 30% to 50% cheaper to run than a noon-inverter air conditioning system. This means the time to pay back the initial extra purchase cost ranges from about 2 years to 5 years depending on running habits and use.

4) Greater Capacity - Generally inverters have an increased capacity over a standard unit. The drawback of this is if you run your system to it's extremes (e.g. by setting to extreme a temperature) the system may actually cost you more to run than a normal system.

So these are the 4 main benefits of an inverter hvac system. Inverters usually cost a little bit more upfront, but they are well worth the additional expense.
