When the weather gets warmer, you will want to run your air conditioner. Naturally, you will expect it to work as it should. But, like all items that have moving parts, your air conditioner may develop problems. If you do experience problems, it may be due to one of several common air conditioning problems.
Dirty Air Filter
The most common problem that causes air conditioners to not function properly is a dirty air filter. The air filter is an important part of the HVAC unit as it filters dust, pet hair and other particles that float around your house. The air filter catches these, keeping them from getting to the coils within the air handler. If the filter becomes too dirty, the air handler may freeze up. In this case, you will feel a distinct difference in the air temperature coming from the air conditioning vents. You may even see ice build-up on the coils and evaporator unit. The easiest way to avoid all these possible problems is to change your air conditioning filter at least one time per month.
Low Freon Level
Low freon is another common problem with HVAC units. Freon is necessary for your HVAC system to run. Since it is a gas, it can leak from the HVAC unit over time. You will need to find a licensed air conditioning specialist to add freon to your air conditioning system. It cannot be purchased without an HVAC license.
Thermostat not working properly
If your thermostat isn't working properly, you won't get a correct reading of the air temperature in your home. Thermostats are not too expensive. They can be purchased and installed by the homeowner. If you have problems with your thermostat, you may want to consider replacing your current thermostat with a programmable one.
Clogged Drain Line
Another common air conditioner problem is a clogged drain line. Your HVAC unit must drain to work properly. Sometimes, dirt can build-up in the air handler. This prevents the water to drain from the coils. If the HVAC system can't drain the water, it may freeze-up the unit. Preventative maintenance can keep this from happening. When having your yearly HVAC inspection, be sure the technician checks that their isn't too much dust and dirt in the pan under the air handler.
The best way to avoid the above common problems with an air conditioner is by having an annual inspection of both your condenser and air handler. Have the coils within the air handler cleaned. Have a qualified service person inspect the entire HVAC unit, including all connectors, wires and freon level.
