Thank Goodness For Car Air Conditioning

Air conditioning means the cooling and dehumidification of the atmosphere inside a room or in a closed compartment for relief from heat. In other words, it can be the process of cooling, heating, ventilation and disinfection which alters the condition of the closed compartment. The appliance or machine which helps to achieve this desired condition of the room temperature is known as an air conditioner. The most common places needing air conditioning generally are houses, buildings and automobiles.

The modern air conditioning concept was first conceived and shown to the world in 1902. It was the W.H. Carrier company in New York whose name still associated with the industry today. The invention was able to control temperature and humidity by blowing air through cold coils, which were kept immersed in cold water. The cold water was able to cool the air and also lower the humidity.

There are two separate segments of air-conditioning applications, which are known as comfort applications and process applications. Comfort applications include room conditioning to control the temperature of indoor air. Included in this are transportation vehicles such as automobiles, ships, air craft, and space ships. Process applications relate to laboratories, hospitals, factories and so on.

An incorrect or inefficient maintenance system is likely to cause the growth of harmful microorganisms. There is no harm when the system is kept clean and properly maintained. Air conditioning system is able to offer clean and safe atmosphere for the safety of a sick person or a person suffering from asthma or allergy. It also has many benefits for the elderly during heat waves, saving many lives.

Air conditioning systems in an automobile provide the driver and passengers a comfortable journey through hot and humid regions. Most of the automobiles sold in the hot areas of the country contain air conditioning systems that come as standard equipment. The first automobile with an air conditioning system that came into the market was a Packard in 1939. It was an additional accessory which was later discontinued due to many problems.

The first American automobile to be fitted with an air conditioner was the Nash in 1954. This was truly a product for the mass market. It was appreciated by the people because it was the first integrated system with the control in the dashboard and an electrical switch for its operation. The price was within the reach of the common masses and very much lower than competitors.

General Motors came out with an optional unit in 1954 as well in its V8 Chevrolet and Pontiac models. Later this became the basis of modern and sophisticated climate control system for automobiles. By 1969, more than half of the cars in the US had been fitted with air conditioners as standard equipment and for better resale value. Today we'd be hard pressed to try and purchase a vehicle without air conditioning.
