Split air conditioner systems are a great alternative to both traditional central air systems, and smaller solutions like portable, or window air conditioners. They allow you to have complete control over which areas are cooled, but don't require that you have a window in the room where they're operating unlike a window unit. They are also about as efficient, if not more so than central air conditioning systems.
While window air conditioners are a decent solution to your cooling needs, they do require that you have a window in the room where it operates. This doesn't work out well if you need to cool rooms that are towards the middle of your home, possibly lacking windows, or not having windows large enough to hold a window a/c unit. They also require that you purchase an entire unit for each room you need cooled. Compare that to a split air conditioner system which has a separate outdoor compressor that is connected to the indoor units via rubber tubing. This means no window is required, and the lightweight indoor unit can be placed anywhere within the room.
Central air systems use large ducts that have issues with efficiency. They can become separated or cracked, which greatly decreases the efficiency of the system. They are also quite difficult to install, requiring extensive ductwork to get everything in order. Again, the split a/c unit wins here as they utilize one solid piece of tubing for output to the outdoor unit, and another one for input. This prevents efficiency issues. This tubing is also quite a bit easier to install than ductwork; not nearly as much work is required to install this tubing.
