Split System Air Conditioner - What Size?

Our customers often ask us about the best size split system air conditioner for a particular room or office space. In hot countries like Australia where we're located, the weather can be extremely hot so it's important to get this right before purchasing a unit.

You may be surprised at all the variables to consider and we hope this information will help get you started.

Experts Air Conditioning Check List

This is what professional air conditioning experts consider in addition to the size of room that you want to cool (or heat) with a split system air conditioner:

  • Elevation of house

  • Type of insulation

  • Type of room (living areas need more power)

  • Ceiling height

  • Size of windows

  • Size of doors

  • Orientation of rooms (i.e. north facing etc)

  • Shade around the house
Room Size versus Split System Air Conditioner Output

Air conditioner outputs are measured in kilowatts (kW). Below is a guide for size of room vs air conditioner output needed.

Please remember the experts checklist above is very important and that the information below is a basic guide to get you started and working out a budget.

Room Size = Output in kW

10m2 = 2.0 - 2.5kW

15m2 = 2.5 - 3.0kW

20m2 = 3.0 - 3.5kW

25m2 = 3.5 - 4.0kW

30m2 = 4.0 - 4.5kW

40m2 = 4.8 - 6.2kW

50m2 = 6.2 - 7.2kW

60m2 = 7.2 - 8.0kW

70m2 = 8.0 - 10.5kW

Calculate the Size of Your Rooms in m2...

Just count how many (large) steps from one end of the room to the other and then count how many steps across the room. Multiply those numbers and you have approximate m2.

Example: 10 steps long x 5 steps wide = 50m2

Steps to Take

  1. First figure out the size of your rooms in m2

  2. Next look at the experts checklist in relation to those rooms. For example, you may need more power if there are very high ceilings or large windows.

  3. Check out the prices of air conditioners in shops and online

  4. Call an air conditioning installer for a free quote and advice

  5. Basically, get out and talk to people and you'll be surprised at what you'll learn

  6. Then make your decision.
