Window Air Conditioning Units: Inefficient Eyesores, or Capable Coolers?

Window air conditioners are the most common type of home cooling system sold today. When you are driving through a neighborhood and see a large box sticking out of a window that's what you are looking at. They contain all of the functional parts in one single, compact box. Window units are an inexpensive way of cooling your home, and are easy to install.

The first window units were inefficient and noisy contraptions. However technology has progressed so that they are able to cool our homes quietly and efficiently. They are readily available at any appliance store and can be purchased straight off the shelf. Once you get them home, installation is simple. All you have to do is open your window and place the unit in the space. If you purchased the appropriate size it should fit perfectly in window. The window is then pulled down so that it touches the top and that should be all that is needed to hold it in place. After the window unit is in position, simply plug it in and turn it on to begin cooling your house! Sometimes it is necessary to fill a small space if the units size does not quite match the window, but this is easily taken care of.

When you purchase your window air conditioner, it is important to take the time to determine the right one for the space you are cooling. To do this, measure the area of the space and reference a BTU chart so see what you need. Single rooms can be cooled efficiently with about 6-10000 BTU's while multiple rooms will require more. If you purchase the wrong BTU, your unit will not work efficiently. If you purchase a unit that is too small, it will strain due to constant running in an attempt to keep the space cool. Larger air conditioners will cool turn on and off frequently and the air won't be circulated enough to be dehumidified. In order for proper and efficient cooling, moisture needs to be removed from the air.

In order to keep your window air conditioner running properly, it is important to keep it cleaned and serviced. Changing the filter is an important maintenance requirement that will help your unit to run more efficiently. If it is not cooling properly for any reason, usually a simple Freon charge will get things back up to standard.

If you are looking for a low cost way to cool your home, consider a window unit. They work great and almost anyone can install them with ease.
