RV Roof Repair and Restoration

With the vast quantities of products available to repair or restore a recreational vehicle roof, it is sometimes difficult to make an informed choice. Your trailer or motor home roof is all that separates you from the elements, and the products that you choose to repair or restore it will ultimately have an effect on the life of your unit, and the level of enjoyment experienced by you during that lifetime.

There are proven systems which offer multiple benefits aside from the basic ability to seal leaks. These benefits consist of the ability to reflect solar heat, the ability to withstand continuous movement without cracking, resistance to chalking and peeling, resistance to impact, the ability to withstand broad changes in temperature, and resistance to dirt pick-up. A system which couples a woven polymer tape with a 100% acrylic, elastomeric coating can address all the above issues. These systems can be applied by persons with modest painting skills, and professional results can be expected. Elastomeric, acrylic coatings will fill small voids and pin-holes in aged aluminum roofs. These products will flow where water goes and set up like a rubber tire. The coating also bonds with the woven polymer tape as well as the rest of the roof surface to form a seamless, waterproof, membrane. If you have an epdm rubber membrane roof, there is a special primer which provides excellent adhesion of the aforementioned system.

100% acrylic elastomeric coatings can be roll-applied directly to aluminum and fiberglass roofs without the need for a primer. Preparation consists of removing dirt, oily residues, old coatings and sealants which show signs of peeling or deterioration. Remember that when it comes to adhesion, your final coating is only as good as the coating underneath, so removal of poorly adhered coating and caulking is mandatory.

Pressure washing or scrubbing with a deck brush and a de-greasing detergent is recommended. The woven polymer tape is then applied over all seams and around any objects that protrude through the roof. Make sure your roof is dry to the touch and the ambient temperature is above 59 degrees Fahrenheit before applying the coating. Do not apply the coating if frost, rain or heavy dew is predicted over the following 24 hours.

This system will be fully cured 24 hours after application and will provide 20 years or more of leak-free protection. The pure white, reflective surface will dramatically reduce internal temperatures and air conditioning costs during exposure to bright sun and summer heat.
