A self-standing unit normally sits on the floor and needs an air port out of a window so the hot air is not trapped inside your home. There is an outlet hose that needs to be out of a window to let the hot air out of the building.

A window unit is a little bit more difficult to install but they are usually more effective. Installing the window unit is just a measurement away. Measure the outside of the unit to make sure that you have a window big enough for it to fit in before purchasing. These are usually larger than floor standing models and take up more space. There is a lip that is mounted to the outside of the frame, this is used to sit up against the window frame so it does not fall out. Make sure that the air conditioner sits level in the window because the unit can leak water into the house which could freeze while its running. Brace the part of the unit that is outside your window frame so it remains level. Let the air conditioning unit sit 24 hours before you turn it on after you have installed it into your window. This allows the liquid inside to settle for 24 hours to ensure peak performance and cooling.
