I've written the following article to inform you of the history of air conditioning. I hope the following article is informative.
Although the concept of air conditioning and the realisation that this would be an affective why to keep cool it took quite a while for people to make a machine to do this. The first attempt was by a gentleman called Dr. John Gorrie who was an American physician in Florida. This attempt was in the 1830's. His concept was to create a machine which made ice, the main use of the machine was that it blew air out which of course would be cold. He came up with this design after treating several patients with yellow fever and malaria. The heat of the hospital rooms became too much for them to bear which in turn worsened their fever. Although this system was reasonably effective it was difficult and hard work to use.
In 1881 President James Garfield was dying. An 'air conditioning tool was constructed by naval engineers; cloths saturated with melted ice water where put into the machine then a fan generating hot air was put overhead. This machine was great because it lowered the temperature by an amazing twenty degrees to ease the suffering of the president but this machine consumed half a million pounds worth of ice in just sixty days.
In 1902 an American engineer; Willis Carrier constructed a machine called the 'Apparatus for Treating Air' which was engineered for the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company who where bases in Brooklyn. Chilled coils were used to cool air and lowered the humidity of the room by fifty-five percent.
In 1922 Carrier accomplished more- he added a compressor which could reduce the size of the unit so it became more useably and added many other things to perfect his machine.
