The summer months are upon us and it is getting warm, no check that, it's getting hot outside! When the heat gets turned up, our thoughts turn towards finding some kind of relief from the heat. Swimming, boating, a cool breeze on a hot summer's night, sometimes even the cool breeze from a window air conditioning unit is enough to get you to grab your wallet and ask the owner, "How much?" Thanks goodness we live in an age where there are lots of options to find to be able to beat the heat, and your choice of air conditioners is a great place to start because, honestly, the boat won't fit in your living room!
Many different options are available today to solve almost any air conditioning problem that you may have on almost any budget. The major players in the world of air conditioning options today are: central air, window units, and portable air conditioners.
Central Air Conditioning
The most effective option for those that have forced air heating systems, fitting your home with a central air conditioning unit that will cool the entire house is sometimes just too good an option to pass up. Typically a cooling unit is mounted on the outside of your home and cool air is supplied to the blower in your furnace unit to be transferred all around the house, into every nook and cranny. There are much more expensive options for supplemental central cooling available for those that live in homes or apartments that have baseboard heating options instead of forced air furnaces, but get that wallet back out because these units are expensive.
Window Air Conditioning Unit
Available to cool basically one room at a time, a window air conditioner, available with a wide variety of British Thermal Unit (BTU) outputs that are selected specifically to match the size of the room that you are attempting to cool, these units come in two main styles: horizontal and vertical. Horizontal designs are used with classic window frames that have a sliding pane that moves up and down to open and close. If your home has a different style of window, i.e. the type of window that opens and closes by sliding the pane from side to side, then you will most likely want to look at a vertical unit for that style of window.
Portable Air Conditioner
Taking the market by storm these days is an alternative to the window unit, and that is a portable air conditioner that can easily be moved from room to room as needed so you can take the cold air with you wherever you go in the house. Allowing you to economize by not having to purchase a window unit for each room in the house, these portable units allow you to cool the family room while you are watching TV and then cooling the bedroom while going to sleep at night - very versatile & very affordable.
