Does Smart Zoning Air Conditioning Technology Really Save You Money?

You can use the latest zone controllers to turn selected areas on and off either manually or automatically, depending on the heat load. The air conditioner will adjust to your settings. Each room or zone can operate independently. For example, when a room has reached the required temperature the air flow can be automatically switched off, saving you money. You get greater control and a closer temperature range, as well as significant savings on energy.

With the advent of inverter-controlled systems, air conditioning has become much more sophisticated, with microprocessors controlling the fan motors and compressor motor frequencies. These inverter systems achieve significant energy savings over conventional stop start systems as they are capable of operating between 10-100% of their rated capacity. As the volume of air varies due to demand, the system adjusts accordingly. The air conditioner operates only at the required capacity. With the increase in energy costs, efficiency is of paramount importance.

Most existing ducted systems can be retro-fitted with the latest zone technology at a reasonable cost. Usually this requires just minimal wiring changes and the addition of zone dampers to the existing duct work. Some of these systems can also be integrated with the air conditioner's main control, enabling it to adjust from heat to cool automatically. These controllers can also adjust the fan settings to vary the air flow in response to the damper settings

Air conditioning systems run on local voltages. 24 volt systems are also available with plug in modules that you can install yourself.

Since we changed our existing two-zone air conditioning system to a smart zone controller system we have found that we have eliminated hot spots within our house and our power savings have been noticeable. Albert G., Dalyellup
