Common Air Conditioning Quick Fixes


If your air conditioner stops working during the hot summer months, it only takes minutes before you figure it out. Although the first reaction is often to call in an HVAC specialist immediately, sometimes there area few quick fixes that will get your air conditioner up and running again. Before calling in the pros and spending money on a repair that you could have easily accomplished yourself, make sure to check a few common problems.

First, take a look at the thermostat. Sometimes the problem is as simple as switching it on. A/C specialists are called in too often for problems that can be easily fixed with the flick of a switch. Also, you can make sure the thermostat is working properly by re-setting it. Check your manual to figure out how to do the reset process. Another common problem can be fixed by checking your breaker box. Sometimes the power to your air conditioner can get cut off because of a tripped breaker. Check your breaker box, locate the breaker that provides power to your unit, and then make sure it is in the right position. Air filters are another cause of air conditioning problems, or more specifically, air filters that haven't been changed recently enough. A dirty air filter can cause the air conditioner to perform poorly and can suck energy without providing results. Experts recommend that A/C filters be replaced every one to three months depending on the saturation of the filter. Check it at least once a month to see if it needs replacing. If the problem still persists once you've checked these solutions, call in a reliable HVAC specialist.
