Types of Portable Air Conditioners

Portable air conditioners are movable cooling units which need not be permanently installed but are ideal when only a particular area of a building needs to be cooled. Being responsible for a modular cooling effect, the portable air conditioner is normally refrigeration based as opposed to being evaporative and hence requires exhaust hoses for venting. Likewise, it is categorized on the basis of the number of hoses present as being a single hosed unit, a double hosed unit or a split unit.

A single hosed unit, as the name suggests, features only one hose which is located at the rear of the portable air conditioner and is connected to the vent kit through which the hot air is released. While this suitable for cooling down a small room, a dual hosed unit is recommended for being used in larger rooms as it is capable of expelling the hot air at a faster rate while being able to cycle the air in large amounts and stabilize the pressure within the room at the same time. Out of the two hoses in this unit, one functions as an exhaust hose which is meant to vent out the hot air from within the room and the other is meant to draw the cooler air from outside.

The portable air conditioner in a split configuration features a compressor and an evaporator in two separate units both of which are connected to each other through detachable refrigerant pipes. This system is considered as being superior to the single and dual hosed units due to advantages like reduction in the level of noise and no requirement of water drainage. However, this unit cannot be kept within the room like the other two and needs to be installed in the balcony. A portable air conditioner continues with this process of air intake, cooling and venting within the room till the time the temperature of the room stabilizes at a particular point as desired by the occupants.
