Steps to Troubleshooting Air Conditioning

For performing air conditioning troubleshooting there are articles on the internet which discuss such operations in detail. Although reading through those articles may not necessarily be of much use to you if you are not yourself an air conditioning technician. You will at least see some diagrams and learned what the different parts of the air condition basically are. With that knowledge, you will be able to comprehend a little when your air conditioning service technician discusses the problems with you.

Here are some points about air conditioning troubleshooting:

1. If your air conditioning unit refuses to start, check to see if the power is on at the breaker box. The switch on the breaker could be tripped. If your unit keeps tripping the fuses the defect may be in the compressor.

2. If your unit runs but does not emit cool air then the technician will probably check the compressor.

3. If the unit is turning on and off abruptly (short-cycling). You most likely have a leak of refrigerant. Turn the system off and call a service technician for repair.

4. A weak air flow coming from your supply vents could indicate a need for a filter change or possibly a blower motor replacement.

5. If you notice water around your air handler, it could be caused by a clogged drain line.

Because most of the troubles seen in air conditioning troubleshooting are caused by the dirt inside, keeping your air conditioner clean inside and out regularly is necessary for prolonging the life of its parts and of the whole unit. If you have ever noticed how quickly an electric fan gets grimy, you can understand that your air conditioner will need to be cleaned at regular intervals. This means performing a preventative maintenance every six months or twice a year at least.

Whenever you use your air conditioner be sensitive to how efficient it is working. The slightest deterioration in the quality of the air can indicate that it is due for cleaning. The frequency of cleaning will depend on how much the unit is used. The dirt inside the air conditioner usually comes off from the filter which traps the foreign particles in the air prior to emitting it. Changing your air filters on a regular basis is the first step to keeping your air cleaner.
