Air Conditioning Systems - Beware of Defective Units

A lot of people believe that an air conditioning unit can be a life saver, especially during those hot summer months. However, buying an A/C is not an easy task. A lot of companies sell defective or low quality products. You should be aware of this, to avoid spending lots of money on a unit that does not work correctly.

The first thing that should be taken into account is the warranty. All well-known brands offer a five year warranty with the purchase of your air conditioning system. Be suspicious if you are not offered this warranty; that is a hint of lack of quality. Most probably the A/C will malfunction after a few months of regular use, and you will not have coverage for it.

Also, you should be aware of old air conditioning units that are sold as new. A/C units used a coolant that has been forbidden by the Montreal Protocol. Even though they will not be able to manufacture air conditioning systems with this coolant as from next year, some companies are still selling them.

The problem about A/C units that use this coolant is not only that they are detrimental for the ozone layer, but also that they are becoming obsolete. Thus you will be paying as much money, or more, as you would pay for a modern unit but you will get an older one.

You also need to look out for uncertified air conditioning systems. If the company that sold you the A/C does not take care of the installment of the unit, then you are probably dealing with an uncertified air conditioning unit. Also, most people do not know that if they try to install the A/C themselves, they will void the warranty.

If you think that you can save a lot of money by installing the air conditioning unit yourself, think again. It may be cheaper at first, but if the unit malfunctions in the future, you will have to spend a lot of money to repair it, since the warranty is void. Always work with certified contractors and certified units.

In addition, most people do not know that air conditioning units need cleaning and maintenance twice a year. If you fail to maintain your A/C system correctly, it will probably malfunction, and the warranty will not apply, because it was your responsibility to hire someone to clean the unit.

Do not try to save money when it comes to A/C units. It is always better to work with well-known brands and with certified professionals to ensure the quality of the product you are purchasing. If you go for the cheaper air conditioning units, you will save some money at first, but you will end up paying a lot more later.
