The Pros and Cons of a Heat Pump Air Conditioner

Are you thinking twice about buying a heat pump air conditioner? Not sure if it's the best kind of heating and cooling system for your home? If you're wondering about the pros and cons of buying one, here are some things you should think about when it comes to advantages and disadvantages.

1. Climate

Pro: It will work well if you live in a moderate climate where temperatures stay pretty mild all year long.

Con: If however, your location is prone to harsh winters, you might want to buy a backup furnace for extra heating. Because these appliances tend to be pricey, however, you might be better off just buying a standard air conditioner and a furnace instead.

Note: Some brands like Trane, however, heat well even in cold climates, so make sure to do your research before you buy.

2. Energy Source

Pro: Most pumps run using electricity. This is definitely a pro because the price of gas and oil has increased a lot in recent years. Plus, because of hydroelectric dams in some parts of the U.S., the cost of electricity has gone down even more. Now it is significantly lower than petroleum.

Con: There are still some areas where petroleum is cheaper than electricity. Thus, buying a pump might increase your utility bill needlessly.

Note: Make sure you know which energy source is more affordable in your location.

These are two of the things you should consider when weighing your options about heating/cooling systems. Good luck!
